Run a purging compound through the extruder at the end of every shift, and you might keep the screw clean enough for weeks. Leave the machine idle without purging, and that same screw can become coated with baked-on resin that takes hours to remove. When to Clean the Screw and Barrel of Your Blown Film Machine

There is no single cleaning schedule that works for every blown film machine. The frequency depends on what you are running, how long you run it, and how often you change materials.

Three scenarios that call for cleaning:

After color changes. Switching from a dark color to a light one? You will need to purge thoroughly—and possibly pull the screw—to avoid streaking. Standard resin alone will not remove pigment residues effectively.

After material changes. Moving from LDPE to a higher-temperature resin like nylon, or from a standard grade to a heavily filled compound, leaves different residues behind. Some materials degrade at different temperatures and leave carbon deposits that production resin cannot dissolve.

When you see quality issues. Streaks, gels, black specks, or inconsistent gauge on your film are telltale signs that contaminants have built up on the screw or inside the barrel. If you are seeing these defects consistently, cleaning is overdue.


Two Approaches to Cleaning a Blown Film Machine Extruder

There are two main ways to clean the screw and barrel of a blown film machine: purging (cleaning in place) and screw pull (manual removal and cleaning). Each has its place.

Purging: The First Line of Defense

Purging means running a specialized cleaning compound through the extruder while the screw stays in the barrel. The purge material scrubs the screw flights and barrel walls as it passes through, carrying away degraded resin, carbon deposits, and color residues.

For routine cleaning between runs or after color changes, purging is the faster, more practical option. You do not need to disassemble anything, and a proper purge can be completed in 15 to 30 minutes. Modern mechanical purging compounds are formulated to work without leaving residue behind, so you can run production resin immediately after.

Screw Pull: For Deep Cleaning

Sometimes, purging is not enough. When you have heavy carbon buildup, scorched material, or a screw that has not been cleaned in months, you need to pull the screw out of the barrel.

The process starts by heating the extruder to working temperature, then pushing the screw out manually or with the machine's extraction mechanism. Once removed, you can clean the screw with a soft brush and a specialized cleaning agent, paying attention to the grooves and crevices where plastic residues tend to accumulate. The barrel interior should also be cleaned—either by wiping with solvent or by using a barrel-scrubbing tool.

One critical rule: never use steel tools to scrape the screw or barrel. Use copper scrapers, brass brushes, or tools made from materials softer than the screw steel. A scratch on the screw surface becomes a collection point for degraded resin, and that one scratch will cause streaks in your film for the rest of the screw's service life.


Choosing the Right Cleaning Material

What you clean with matters as much as how you clean.

Resin-Based Cleaning Compounds

Commercial purging compounds are engineered for specific applications. Some use abrasive fillers to mechanically scrub the screw and barrel. Others use chemical action to dissolve stubborn deposits. The right choice depends on what you are running and what you are trying to remove.

For standard PE film production, a general-purpose mechanical purge works well for routine cleaning. For heavily contaminated systems, you may need a more aggressive compound with glass or mineral fillers that provide extra scrubbing action.

Non-Resin Cleaning Methods

Some operators use materials like ground corncobs, rice hulls, or sawdust as a low-cost cleaning alternative. These materials are fed through the extruder at operating temperature; the friction between the particles and the screw surface helps remove adhered resin.

This approach can be effective, but it requires careful follow-up. After using a non-resin cleaner, you must purge the machine with production resin to remove any residual abrasive particles. Skipping this step can leave abrasive material in the system that damages the screw and barrel over time.

Solvent Soaking

For screws that have been removed from the barrel, soaking in an organic solvent can help dissolve baked-on material. Acetone or cyclohexanone are commonly used. The screw is submerged until the adhered resin swells and softens, at which point it can be removed manually.

This method is time-consuming—soaking can take hours depending on the thickness of the buildup—and requires proper safety precautions. Solvent containers must be sealed, stored away from heat and ignition sources, and labeled clearly.


Preventing Buildup Between Cleanings

The best cleaning is the one you do not have to do. A few simple habits can keep your blown film machine running cleaner for longer.

Shut Down Properly

At the end of each production run, purge the extruder before shutting down the heaters. Running a stable, low-temperature resin through the system while cooling displaces the production resin and leaves the screw coated with a material that is easier to push out on the next startup.

Clean the Die and Air Ring

Residue on the die lip or in the air ring does not affect the screw directly, but it does affect film quality—and film quality issues often get blamed on the extruder. Wipe the die lip with a brass scraper and a lint-free cloth at the end of every shift. Clean the air ring weekly to prevent dust and debris from blocking airflow.

Monitor Operating Conditions

Watch the pressure gauge and main motor current during production. A gradual increase in either can indicate that the screen pack is clogging or that material is beginning to stick to the screw. Catching these changes early lets you address the problem before it becomes a full-scale cleaning job.
